2004 New York Auto Show

Cars, cars, cars.

The main tent in the inner driveway was the best bargain of the whole show, since admission was free and it held three Subaru rally cars. Here we see a 2004 Subaru WRX Project Car.

Petter Solberg's 2003 Subaru Impreza WRC. Unfortunately, you couldn't sit in any of the rally vehicles at the show. They were for display only.

The Volvo XC90 Lego SUV. One man's unfortunate job was to keep people from touching the model and trying to pry off pieces. The tires are real, everything else is Lego.

Camera phones being used en masse this year. These guys are gawking at the Audi from the upcoming movie I, Robot.

Mazda 6-series wagon. I'm growing fond of these little wagons.

Jutta Kleinschmidt's VW Touareg from the 2004 Paris-Dakar rally. I recall a scene from Speed TV's coverage which showed this Touareg fording a stream only to completely flood its engine. Jutta was pissed. Standing next to the Touarge, I realized the stream must have been pretty damned deep.

MINI Cooper convertible. I'd hate to be the person tasked with keeping this car clean.

The Jeep mini-blimp that floated around the lower concourse. It had several strategically mounted fans that moved it around the hall.

SCCA ProRally modified Dodge Neon. I get a kick out of these huge light assemblies.

Mitsu Montero Dakar 2004. This and the Touareg were unique in the Dakar rally for their spaceship-esque looks. That kid in the bottom corner better watch out...
